The Master Data Quadrant Returns After a Four-Year Sabbatical
Gartner brings back its MDM map. The single view it charts has been under construction the whole time.
On 6 April 2026, Gartner published a Magic Quadrant for Master Data Management Solutions — its first since it retired the category in 2022. Twenty vendors were placed on a grid measuring who can best help you build the single view you have been building since the last grid.
Gartner released the 2026 Magic Quadrant for Master Data Management Solutions on 6 April 2026, evaluating twenty vendors on Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision. It is the first MDM Magic Quadrant the firm has published in roughly four years, having shelved the category in 2022. Salesforce (Informatica) was named a Leader, by its own count the seventh time it has held that position across the chart's various lifetimes.
The quadrant returning matters less than what its absence implied. For four years the discipline did not pause; deduplication jobs ran, survivorship rules fired, and 'single customer view' stayed on roadmaps. What lapsed was the scoreboard, not the game. A category can go dark on the analyst calendar while every organization in it keeps paying maintenance on the same unresolved entities.
The deeper tell is that a market needs a new map at all. Mature problems get standards; recurring ones get quadrants. That MDM warrants a fresh ranking of twenty vendors in 2026 says the core question — who is the authoritative source for 'customer,' and who is accountable when two of them disagree — is still answered by procurement rather than by an owner. A grid sorts tools. It does not assign the person whose name goes on the golden record.
Watch which use cases the report rewards and whether buyers read the axes as a shopping list or a mirror. If the takeaway is 'pick the upper-right vendor,' the next four years rhyme with the last. The Leader's logo is the easy part of the page. The hard part is the sentence no quadrant prints: which human owns the master, and what happens the morning two definitive sources disagree about a single customer.
A vendor quadrant ranks tools, not the question underneath them. A market that needs a fresh map of twenty vendors every four years is admitting the core problem is still solved by procurement, not by a decision.
